we will begin each work coverage of the deadly shooting in just a moment. maureen: first we are on a severe weather alert as storms crash through our area. that is the scene from just a few minutes ago in fairfax word 10,000 people are without power. similar scenes in bowie, maryland. leon: that is scary looking stuff there. that is in addition to reports we're getting a flooded roads and trees down. this one is blocking new hampshire avenue at georgia avenue. there also to reports of people being struck by lightning in maryland. at least one hurt in several homes are damaged. doug hill is traffic -- tracking with a worse about whether is now here it doug: doug: the heaviest have now passed south of the district into southern maryland. severe stutter storm warning continuing until 6:15 in that polygon that accompanies --

people in one of the nation's oldest african-american churches. leon: it has been called a hate crime. 13 hours after shots rang out, police captured the suspect, dylann roof, 250 miles away in north carolina. we traveled to his hometown of lexington, south carolina. maureen: brad bell is live in the community with what he found. reporter: this is the home right back here where dylann roof was living. there was no sign of any sort of an issue. we talked to the people who live in the neighborhood and they say they never saw any problems. they saw a very quiet young man and they find it hard believe he has committed this crime that is shaken and an entire nation. the all that hunt for the man wanted for carrying out the worse mass murder in south carolina history. it ended late this morning with a routine traffic stop 220 50

miles away. >> terrible human being who would go into a place of worship where people were praying and kill them is now in custody. reporter: 21-year-old dylann roof. according to witnesses, he walked into historic emanuel ame church in charleston doing a prayer service. police say the suspect stat with members of the predominantly black congregation for one hour before finally standing up and opening fire killing nine people including the church's pastor, south carolina state senator clementa pinckney. >> senator pinckney was the moral conscious of the general assembly. reporter: police say the government reportedly told the woman he would let her live so she could tell people what he did. >> we look up today -- we woke

up today and the heart and soul of south carolina is broken. reporter: surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect. local police of the fbi spent the night looking for the car. they set out a nationwide alert, broadcasting these images and the license plate number of the vehicle and then played this morning the car spotted i a passerby in shelby, north to line up. a police officer there responded and pulled them over in arrested dylann roof. this afternoon the trusting community pulling together to breathe a sigh of relief and pray for the families of the victims. a horrific incident that is destination. president obama: now is the time for mourning and healing. reporter: what we know about young mr. dylann roof is that he bounced around this area. we are now southeast of

the nation in grieving. he also expresses frustration. president obama: i have had to make statement like this too many times. communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times. we don't have all the facts that we do know that once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting her hands on a gun. maureen: the president acknowledged this is a time for morning but said the nation must record with the fact shootings like this do not happen with the same frequencies and other advanced nations. the nation's most vocal supporter of gun rights, the national rifle association, has not yet responded for request for comments. leon: a gun range advertised -- many flooded the charleston post and courier's facebook page to a complaint about an ad that was found right above the story from

leon: was it an accident or premeditated crash. a tuesday morning rick killed a five-year-old boy. kevin lewis explains why a bitter divorce is adding to this mystery. reporter: from the start of the lease call this fiery car crash suspicious. her five-year-old son, daniel dana, found dead in the backseat. civil court records show her marriage was headed towards divorce. in 2013, the 33 wrote filed a protective order against her husband. three days later he launched a protective order against his wife. the couple then filed for divorce. a court hearing was scheduled on the very day she jumped a concrete median and landed in this brush.

d.c. fire and ems after not making changes after a man's death in 2006. david rosenbaum died after being beaten after mugging. emergency responders wrote him off a strong. -- as drunk. reporter: firefighters ignored his daughter's pleas for help. he died feet from a fire station. a painful reminder for david rosenbaum's family about continued failures. >> all the attitudes and horrible things that happen with my brother, to see this again is horrible. reporter: he went for a walk in one of the victim of a mugging. first responders present the unconscious man was drunk. once at howard university hospital he might was on a gurney without treatment until it was too late. >> this is all to do with attitudes and all the things we found when my brother was killed. reporter: the family filed suit against the hospital and against the d.c. government. the establishment of the task force was part of the settlement. >> we have a long way to go.

reporter: the task force had 36 recommendations. an audit just released found the department has adopted just 11 recommendations. six partially, and it did adopt four bit later rescinded or reverse them. it is yet to adopt 15 of them. the biggest failure achieving and all hazard agency. >> where everyone is trained on the fire suppression side in the medical services side. maureen: that was steven tschida reporting. leon: we have a lot for you to report. doug: the immediate area has cleared up quickly. there is one area i want to show you live now that is at the heart of this severe thunderstorm. we're looking at the benedict bridge. i'm not sure which where we are looking. we're looking from the charles county side looking out of hughesville in the going eastward towards prince

frederick. i have traveled over that bridge many times and it is only about 20 feet above the water. you can see what is happening with the cars moving as far as the wind underneath and the high wind. that storm is moving out but it is continuing further south. adjacent sections into charles county. as get right to the numbers here and there are pictures to put this into perspective. those are the core areas of the severe thunderstorm. we bulls zoom in now and give you some real details. this is prince frederick and this is the area where we are seeing the picture. the bridge comes over right here and in that area there is some hail that will follow. we are watching this closely. very intense thunderstorm activity moving to the south and east at about 35 mouse for our. -- miles per hour. all going to get nailed for this torrential rain and lightning.
